Ray Bradbury is a legend for many of the books he wrote, but most notably for his 1953 Sci-Fi novel, Fahrenheit 451. This episode marks the beginning of a three-episode as Luke and James discuss part 1: The Hearth and the Salamander. Now, let’s allow ourselves to be bothered by ideas for a while.
Ideas include: A look back at the life and career of the author, the novel’s iconic opening line, the manic-pixie-dream-girl trope, the dangers of disconnecting from art and human connections, the resistance of upsetting ideas, what value might or might not be found in abstract art, the dangers of whitewashing history, and the danger of limiting discussion of controversial topics, and the rising tide of anti-intellectualism. They end with a conversation about content warnings, movie ratings, censorship, and so on, and attempt to take the discomfort head on.
