Ink to Film

Apr 12, 2018

JRR Tolkien is a giant in genre literature and the guys are eager to discuss his novel, The Fellowship of the Ring, part one of The Lord of the Rings. In this episode, they cover the first five chapters of the novel. But first, who was JRR Tolkien? They begin by digging into the life of the legendary author and how fighting in World War I and living through World War II may or may not have informed his writing. Also, just what sort of weed are these hobbits smoking?

Chapters covered
CH 1: A Long-Expected Party

CH 2: The Shadow of the Past

CH 3: Three is Company

CH 4: A Short Cut to Mushrooms

CH 5: A Conspiracy Unmasked

Topics include: Parsing Bilbo’s speech, what writer’s might learn from LOTR and what they might avoid, the beautiful prose, what it’s like to leave a place forever, and what goes into a great metaphor.

Join us next week for part 2, part 3 the week after, then our movie episode where we finish with Peter Jackson's 2001 film.
